Your education matters

At AWT we believe you deserve the highest standard of education to prepare you for making your own decisions in avalanche terrain. Our AST 1 + Intro to Backcountry includes 2 full days in the field (instead of one) + an online course (instead of a classroom). That’s twice as much field time as most of our competitors, and it’s worth it. We spend more time in the field working on skills to take with you on your next tour.

We leave the lift tickets at home. Our field days take place from start to finish in the backcountry and in avalanche terrain.
Students will be introduced to local backcountry zones, while touring/riding all day on a backcountry snowpack.

AST 1 + Intro to Backcountry is a comprehensive introductory education for students who have little-to-no backcountry experience and want to dive into backcountry travel and make decisions on their own and as part of a group.

Avalanche Canada Certified Skills Training on Big White, Kelowna, BC

why the walrus?

The Alpine Walrus is a symbol that anyone, with any sort of experience, can have fun safely in the mountains. Humans, just like walruses, are prone to making mistakes, blunders, and errors. It’s part of life.

The walrus is our homage to human error and vulnerability, to accepting everyone in the backcountry, and to encourage training as a means to make fewer mistakes and in turn limit the destructive potential of our blunders.
